PONTYPOOL RFC:

ONE GAME

JIW JIW FILMS x PONTYPOOL RFC

THE CONCEPT

"Once one of Wales' biggest rugby clubs, Pontypool RFC went from all-conquering champions to the brink of oblivion.

"'One Game is the remarkable story of how they beat all the odds to come within 80 minutes of glory."

Although this film centered around the fortunes of the rugby team, it also aimed to tell the story of the fortunes of the town and the role the club plays in it.

Pontypool RFC’s journey was played out against the backdrop of socioeconomic difficulties suffered by many post-industrial towns in the UK, and the film aimed to capture the role sport plays in those communities whilst also portraying a compelling sporting adventure.

THE EXECUTION

During the month lead up to the play-off, we were embedded within the club, capturing content but also getting to know the playing and coaching staff.

This enabled them to get used to the presence of cameras and hopefully allow us to capture footage as authentic as possible.

Following the play-off, we shot interviews with players, staff and journalists, reflecting on Pontypool’s history and journey, before editing the film and delivering it to the club.

THE RESULT

‘Pontypool RFC: One Game’ was premiered first by the club at a private screening for supporters, before being released across the club’s social media channels to thousands of viewers.

The film was nominated at both the Welsh Media Awards and the RTS Cymru Wales Awards, winning in the latter, as well as being featured on Wales Online.

The rapport with ourselves and the club was also built to such an extent that we provided video content for them - including a season review film - for the 2019/20 season.
